Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat – 2 Day Canoe Trip

A Fantastic 2 Day Canoe Hire on the River Wye.Ross On Wye Canoe Hire

This Two day trip is a perfect for some friends who want to see the area but take it easy at the same time.

Day One – 10 Miles

Starting with us at our riverside centre in Symonds Yat East, we give you the equipment you need and load all your equipment into the canoes and transport you up to Hoarwithy. Hoarwithy is a sleepy little village in Herefordshire, just 10 Miles upstream of Ross On Wye. After a safety briefing we get you into the water just across a field from the Harp pub and the Tuscan Style St Catherine’s Church.

Your canoeing trip starts paddling the 10 miles through the herefordian countryside towards your overnight stop in Ross on Wye,  under the suspension bridge at sellack and into How Caple, through the salmon pools of the Ingestone estate.

You will approach a crossing-less bridge at Backney. This partly demolished railway bridge looks fantastic against the skyline. (be sure to take a photo)
Fast approaching Ross on Wye you will see the motorway bridge ahead of you and cruise underneath. Depending on where you are staying you have a choice of stops. The Ross Rowing Club allows camping on the riverside but they require prior notice and booking. The get out here are some long shallow steps on the river left. The Hope & Anchor has Guest accommodation and a great beer garden to unwind in, 300m around the bend The White Lion Pub camping ground rolls gently into the river. A Popular camp spot and great food.

The camping and accommodation here is very busy and needs to be booked before your canoe trip. There is no Wild camping allowed along the River Wye sadly.

Day Two – 15 Miles

After a Good Breakfast make sure you have everything and get back into your Canoes and start your second day on the Majestic River Wye.

Gently paddling through the riverside farm land and on towards Kerne Bridge. As you approach the Multi Arch bridge, you spread out a little from other canoes on the water, leaving roughly 3-4 boat lengths between you as you pass through the bridge. Just the otherside of the bridge there a short grade 2 rapid, you shoot through this section and on past the Kerne Bridge Canoe Launch Point.

Canoeing through Bishopswood and Lydbrook and towards the English Bicknor Youth Hostel, stop for a brief look at an amazing little church right on the right hand river bank.

You then pass underneath the disused railway bridge at lower Lydbrook, following the river as it meanders in a big horseshoe underneath the famous Symonds Yat Rock Viewpoint, where the peregrine falcons nest. Depending on the time of year you will see them hunting and teaching their young to fly.
From here you paddle underneath Huntsham Bridge and past Symonds Yat West. It takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to paddle from Huntsham bridge back to Symonds Yat East.

This section of the trip takes approximately 5-6 Hours of gentle paddling, enjoy a picnic lunch on your way down. The Full day trip allows you have the canoes until 16:30. This covers just 15 Miles of fantastic Wye Valley scenery.
