Arrive with us at Symonds Yat East We launch you at the base of the historic town of Ross-on-Wye, which is a 10-15 minutes minibus drive from our riverside centre in Symonds Yat East. After we give you a safety brief and get you into your canoes, we set you off down the majestic River Wye. Paddle 6 miles of tranquil placid water leaving the town behind you. Look up to your right as you approach Kerne Bridge (your second bridge) to get a unique view of Goodrich Castle. Canoeing through Bishopswood, Lydbrook and on towards the Welsh Bicknor Youth Hostel, stop for a brief look at an amazing little church on the right-hand river bank. You will then pass underneath the disused railway bridge at lower Lydbrook, following the river as it meanders in a big horseshoe underneath the famous Symonds Yat Rock Viewpoint, where the Peregrine Falcons nest. Depending on the time of year you may well see them hunting and teaching their young to fly. This is the perfect place to stop and enjoy your picnic with some stunning views. Just please leave nothing behind. From here you paddle underneath Huntsham Bridge and past Symonds Yat West. It takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to paddle back to our riverside centre at Symonds Yat East from this point. This trip covers 15 miles and you have until 16:30 to finish the journey, which is plenty of time. It is designed not as a race but a gentle paddle. We lock up your canoes and put your buoyancy aids into our drying room overnight so you have nothing to worry about.
You can camp at one of the great local campsites Elmsdale, Bracelands or Sterrett’s (we store your equipment overnight and have it ready for your trip the next day) Or you can stay at The Royal Lodge, The Saracens Head Inn or Wye Rapids House which are all a short walk from our centre.
Arrive with us for 10:00 After your own visual inspection of the rapids, we launch you at our private riverside centre and send you of upstream to warm up. You then paddle down through the Symonds Yat East Rapids under the watchful eye of one of our highly qualified instructors. Then you will go on through the tranquil waters towards the historic town of Monmouth. As you paddle down towards Wales from your English starting point, you skirt the outer part of the Forest of Dean. Listen out for the deer and wild boar whilst you enjoy the breath taking scenery. Paddle past Monmouth Rowing Club (watch out for rowing boats on this section before the bridge, they might not see you) and under the big stone bridge. You will now canoe past where the River Monnow feeds into the River Wye, under a small bridge and past the removed viaduct. Here you will go through a small section of rough water (keep to the right-hand side of the river) and onto Redbrook. You will know when you are approaching your finish destination, as you will paddle through a large boulder field in the river (river levels can sometimes hide these). Around the bend you will see a huge cast railway bridge over the river. The Boat Inn is situated under this bridge and your get out point is directly opposite on the left-hand bank of the river. We will be there to collect you at your allotted time and transport you back to our centre in Symonds Yat East. * Please note due to traffic issues we will not allow any downstream hire on Fridays Got any questions?
