River Wye & Symonds Yat

Environment

We truly care about this beautiful area we are fortunate enough to call home.

We have been operating here since 1987, but living and exploring the area all our lives.

We have seen many changes over the years and more recently a lot of publicity about the condition of rivers and seas around the world, including the one on our doorstep.

This very sad fact can hopefully in time be turned around with proper management and funding from waterboards and our Government.

Passionate about the outdoors!

At Wyedean, we are deeply committed to the preservation of the water quality in both the River Wye and River Severn. In the Severn region in areas where we surf/ride, the situation is alarming. The Severn Bore is severely impacted by raw sewage discharging into the river estuary at Newnham and Minsterworth.

In contrast, the River Wye remains relatively healthy, with key indicator species such as salmon, trout, otters, kingfishers, and rare riffle beetles still thriving. However, the river has undergone notable changes over the years. When I, Paul, first began paddling on the Wye, I could often see large groups of eels in the rapids and witness thousands of shad/mayfish returning to the river, both of which have largely disappeared. While pollution plays a role, the decline of eel populations has also been exacerbated by the trawling of elvers at the river’s mouth, destined for the Japanese food markets.

Though the River Wye remains in good enough condition for safe canoeing and kayaking, it requires urgent protection to ensure it remains viable for future generations.

What is Wyedean doing about it?

Paul, one of the Directors of Wyedean, has been canoeing and kayaking on the River Wye for nearly 60 years and has served on the Wye National Advisory Committee (WYNAC) for over a decade. In this role, he has consistently advocated for safe navigation and a healthy river ecology, while promoting best practices among canoe hire companies through our governing body, formerly known as British Canoeing (now Paddle UK), and in collaboration with the Environment Agency. Additionally, Paul chairs the committee dedicated to the preservation of the Symonds Yat Rapids and Island.

We have a strong 200 local members canoe club who are a dedicated community, all passionate about both the sport of canoeing and the protection of the river’s natural environment.

We take active steps to care for the river, including two annual river litter picks. Additionally, we have implemented a policy to prevent any glass containers from being taken on river trips by our canoe hire customers.

Education is a key focus for us. We strive to ensure that every customer who enjoys the river with us is aware of the importance of respecting the environment, minimizing litter, maintaining quietude, protecting wildlife, and reporting any pollution or illegal activities.

Transport & Environmental Impact

All of our vehicles are used in an eco-friendly manner. Not only does this reduce the amount of diesel used, it also reduces our carbon footprint.

Furthermore, we are actively replacing our minibus fleet so they are all EURO 6 standard, utilising AdBlue to help reduce emissions.

We also proudly use a lot of Grumman Canoes, not only are these light weight, but also easy to repair and unlike the plastic canoes, they are recyclable at the end of their life.
